Intersectional Identities in For Today I Am a Boy - Literature Essay Samples
In the novel For Today I Am A Boy, Kim Fu tells the story of a young Chinese-Canadian named Peter Huang, who throughout the novel grapples with the struggles of gender, race, and class. Peterââ¬â¢s experiences are particularly complex, namely because of the cultural weight of being the only male child in a Chinese family; however, Peter feels that he is a girl. Kim Fu presents Peterââ¬â¢s queerness through a racialized lens in order to represent the inherent complications of being doubly-marginalized in a society that cannot separate race or gender from a personââ¬â¢s identity. Fu uses Peterââ¬â¢s relationships with white characters to represent societyââ¬â¢s inherently racialized view of queerness and its implications on trans* visibility and how trans* people express their gender; in this paper, I will focus on Peterââ¬â¢s relationships with Margie, John, and Mrs. Becker. Peter just wants to be seen; Margie gives Peter the visibility as a feminine person that he wants to be seen as, however Margie can only see Peter this way through her racialized view of him. Margie has a racialized fetish, and she exoticizes Peter. When they first meet, Margie calls Peter ââ¬Å"pretty,â⬠which made him ââ¬Å"felt like she had said a word that only [he] knew, that [he] had made upâ⬠(121). The word ââ¬Å"prettyâ⬠is traditionally associated with describing feminine beauty. Being described as a word that is inherently feminine makes Peter feel as if he is truly being seen for the woman he is. However, Margie only thinks of Peter as pretty due to the fact that Western societies present Asian men as asexual, feminine, and delicate. When Peter and Margie have their first sexual encounter, she says to him, ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËSo pretty and delicate. Just like Iââ¬â¢d hopedââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (126). While Peter is being seen as a feminine-presenting person as he wishes to be seen as, the visibility is distorted because Margie is fetishizing and exoticizing Peter as an Asian person. The only way that Peter can truly be seen is through the gaze of a post-colonist, racist, white woman through her oriental fantasies. To fulfill her blatantly racist fantasies further, Margie ââ¬Å"forced [Peter] to wear her panties and stockings [â⬠¦] She applied plum lipstick first, [â⬠¦] with odd care, deliberate motions. [â⬠¦] She peered close, stroke for stroke and impersonal, as though she saw only a canvasâ⬠(127). The word choice of ââ¬Å"canvasâ⬠is particularly significant; Peter is a blank slate that Margie can use to fulfill her every fantasy. Heââ¬â¢s not a person, but an object, a means to an end. To Margie, Peter is a ââ¬Å"toy,â⬠a plaything to fulfill her oriental fantasies that blind her to Peterââ¬â¢s true racial identity (127). Instead, Peterââ¬â¢s racial identity becomes a caricature, a complete distort ion of truth. However, in this distortion, Peter becomes seen as the feminine person he wants to be visible as. The White Gaze allows Peter to be visible, however the two marginalized identities cannot exist simultaneously with the racialized lens; a compromise always exists. John is portrayed as a white savior figure in order to emphasize that as a queer person of color, Peterââ¬â¢s narrative is not authentically understood or seen due to the fact that queerness is always associated with whiteness. John has a high level of privilege that he fails to recognize. When Peter firsts meets Eileen, she tells him that John is ââ¬Å"ââ¬Ëalways bringing home curious strays. Thinks itââ¬â¢s his job to educate the whole fucking worldââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (217). To both John and Eileen, the people they attempt to help are like ââ¬Å"strays,â⬠people who need direction, a home. John has a tendency to find people who he can save, direct, and provide a home for; he feels an obligation or a ââ¬Å"jobâ⬠to save people through educating them about queer issues that they potentially did not have the resources to learn about previously, like Peter. In the context of colonialism, this parallels the roles of imperialist countries and the countries that they col onized in the name of saving people and attempting to help them. In the novel, John represents the colonialist country while Peter is the country in need of help. John treats Peter like a project instead of a person. When Peter tells John and Eileen that he wants to be Audrey Hepburn for Halloween, they assist him in his transformation for Halloween night. This transformation, done by two white people, turn Peter into a white woman, Audrey Hepburn, who inhabits a very specific and idealistic type of womanhood and femininity. The womanhood that John and his friends encourage Peter to be is a normative type of womanhood: a white womanhood. Peter cannot be seen authentically for who he is. Peter reflects on this, saying that ââ¬Å"Eileen and John saw straight through me, past me, like a hole had been bored through my chestâ⬠(235). This metaphor can be taken quite literally; Peter has no visibility in his relationship with John, who does not recognize Peterââ¬â¢s unique and co mplex experiences as a queer person of color. When Peter confronts him about this, John yells, ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËYou think my lifeââ¬â¢s been easy?ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ to which Peter replies, ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËYes, I think itââ¬â¢s been fucking easy!ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (234). Because Peterââ¬â¢s narrative of transness has been racialized, his narrative is non-normative. Queerness is understood through a racialized lens; queerness is always a white person. The normative narrative of queerness/transness is whiteness. John, the White Savior, fails to recognize his privilege as a white person, and thus fails to see Peter completely. Mrs. Becker serves as a mode of white surveillance to represent whiteness policing non-normative gender expression. Similar to Margie, Mrs. Becker uses her white gaze to make Peter visible; however, this visibility is unwanted because it serves to correct non-normative performances of gender. In an early description of Mrs. Becker, Peter says that she is ââ¬Å"standing in her yard and watching the sprinkler spit its twitching lines like it needed supervisionâ⬠(48). The language in this already makes the reader associate Mrs. Becker with surveillance or ââ¬Å"supervision.â⬠She is constantly watching, keeping things in ââ¬Å"lines,â⬠making sure that everything goes the way it is expected to. When Mrs. Becker catches Peter wearing the apron naked while doing housework, Peter catches ââ¬Å"a flash of white in [his] peripheral vision. [â⬠¦] Mrs. Becker was standing in our yard, staring through the window as frankly as a ghostâ⬠(50). Peter notices the flash of white, spying on him, policing his private expressions and explorations of gender. The ââ¬Å"flash of whiteâ⬠can be interpreted to represent whiteness as a whole, constantly policing how gender is performed. Whiteness is normative; if something is being performed non-normatively, then it must be changed, or not seen. Mrs. Becker is another example of the white gaze, which structures racialized gender and sexuality. The white gaze is a method of regulation and containment, a way to make sure people do not inhabit spaces that they are not supposed to take up. Inhabiting space and visibility are vastly intertwined. Non-normative expressions of sexuality and gender are kept from being visible. In order to be seen, Peter must transcend both race and gender because the norm is a cisgender, white woman. White colonial structures prevent queer people of color, doubly-marginalized people, from being visible as their true selves without some aspect of their identity being compromised. Between the white gaze, the white savior, surveillance, and fetishization, people of color are never wholly seen authentically. Bibliography Fu, Kim. For Today I Am A Boy. First Mariner Books, 2014.

(2005). This shows that the authors are reputable as well credible. This introduction is important for the reader to be able to understand on what to expect in the article. A good introduction usually helps the reader focus on the content in the article Johns, B, Torres, TT, WHO-CHOICE. (2005). It also helps the writer in his preparation of content in a logical mannerThe abstract of this article is actually the first section an individual will read before going to the main body. If this section is not clear it will kill the morale of the reader to continue reading the article May, C, sibley, A, and hunt, K. (2014). The introduction has been clearly done by first stating the challenges and also the methods of improving the healthcare quality. The abstract briefly gives us the results collected after the spread of the best home care practices.Yes, this is because it has clearly shown on the importance of the grounded theory in the addressing of question, and processes and also how to move above the qualitative description. It has also gone ahead and sampled four home care organizations, these organizations are known to have the best practice guidelines towards the caring of the elderly. May, C, sibley, A, and hunt, K. (2014) Sampling this home care organization was very effective. This is because it is only by doing so that they can be able to collect meaningful information.Yes, this is because it has clearly shown on the importance of the grounded theory in the addressing of question, and processes and also how to move above the qualitative descriptionYes the literature review is comprehensive and up to date. But most of the books that are used for references are dated far back. In the topic that we are dealing with we require new sources of evidence that have been collected recently Macpee, M, and Bouthlette, F. (2008). This will be very advantageous if we want to learn on how to spread, and sustain the best practice for home care of the older adults. So as to be able to be identified with the latest evide nce the literature should preferably be dated five years back. The authors experience in this article is towards community based reproduction and innovation in health services in Africa and Asia Macpee, M, and Bouthlette, F. (2008). There is another framework that was used in the spread of operational changes, so as to improve access to primary care. The aim of this paper has been clearly stated. The aim of this article is to inform the people on how to improve the health care quality. It has also tried to explain on the challenges facing the models of spread of these factors Ferlie, E, Fitzgerald, L, Wood, M, Hawkins, C. (2005). Methods such as interviews also have been used so as to acquire more information from institutions such as Ontario, which had already devised the best practices related to the aged. This information would be very helpful to other institutions planning to start similar programs. Authors:Are the authors reputable?YeNo Abstract:Does the abstract summarise the key components of the study?YesNo Rationale:Is the rationale for undertaking the research clearly outlined?YesNo Literature Review:Is the literature review comprehensive and up-to-date?YesNo Aim:Is the aim of the research clearly stated?YesNo Ethics:Are all the ethical issues identified and addressed?YesNo Briefly state a rationale for your answer including what ethical issues were identified or not identifiedYes they have been identified and addressed. For instances ethical approval was obtained from the McMaster University. Research team members also made sure that they have an informed consent, protection of participant confidentiality and a collection of signed out consent forms Ferlie, E, Fitzgerald, L, Wood, M, Hawkins, C. (2005). There is no widely agreed upon definition of the terms scale up and spread. . But it has been suggested that scale à ¢Ã¢â ¬up is the one that is mostly used in international health. Whereas spread on the other hand is used to refer to the chan ges, in improvement in countries that enjoy high- income. Ferlie, E, Fitzgerald, L, Wood, M, Hawkins, C. (2005) In the study they have opted to use the definition of spread as the means through which new working methods are created in one setting.Research that has been conducted has also shown that health care has mostly focused on acute care outpatient clinics Ferlie, E, Fitzgerald, L, Wood, M, Hawkins, C. (2005). In Ontario in Canada a large number of the home care organizations work with the registered nurses association. This is ethical because if it is registered, then it is a legit association which helps in the implementation and dissemination of the best practice guidelines. Methodology:Is the methodology identified and justified?YesNo State the methodology used and the evidence based reasons why it was a suitable choiceOne of the methodologies used is qualitative design, and also the use of interview. The sample size of eight to ten and these individuals were interviewed tw ice Glifford, WA, Davis, BL, Graham, ID, Tourangeau, AE, Woodend, K, and Lefetre NL. (2013). Consistent with theoretical sampling approaches. The interviews were used to better understand the experience of the participants. The researchers also made a point of working hand in hand with the trained recruiters. They did so to find the potential participants who my give them information. Interview is the best method to use if you want to find the first hand information on the matter you is investigating Glifford, WA, Davis, BL, Graham, ID, Tourangeau, AE, Woodend, K, and Lefetre NL. (2013). They are also effective because you will be have a one on one conversation with the source, and he will be giving you the information of the events as they took place Study Design:Is the study design identified?YesNoIs the rationale for choice of design evident?YesNo State the study design used and give evidence based reasons why it was a suitable choiceThe use of the grounded theory approach has b een so as to be able to explain the practice of supplying quality services to the home care concern with the elderly. It is also efficient for the future providence of guidelines in research Glifford, WA, Davis, BL, Graham, ID, Tourangeau, AE, Woodend, K, and Lefetre NL. (2013). The approach was selected amongst many other approaches because; it offers more clear guidelines for data analysis. It is also compatible with the contemporary thinking which shifts towards the social constructivist ontology, and pays attention to factors that are contextual that affect the topic been studied.Using this method entailed sampling four home care organizations. The organizations were sampled if; they were in the process or even planned to spread the process, and tools which are related to the best practice in their organization. Within each home care diverse participants were sampled, and they wanted the sample size to range from eight to ten individuals per site. They also preferred the use of the qualitative and not the quantitative research design Glifford, WA, Davis, BL, Graham, ID, Tourangeau, AE, Woodend, K, and Lefetre NL. (2013). This is because only the qualitative research design could be able to answer the research question properly. The qualitative approach helps in the exploration of the areas where people have got little knowledge, making it the best approach to use. It also produces rich and detailed data that contributes to one understanding the issue properly Glifford, WA, Davis, BL, Graham, ID, Tourangeau, AE, Woodend, K, and Lefetre NL. (2013). It also includes the voices of the participants and through achieving to make the world visible it has got the power to transform the world as a whole. In this case we see that for individuals to improve healthcare they will require timely and effective spread of innovations Creswell, JW. (2013). However, is hardly there any rigorous research on the methods of spread, factors influencing the spread. It has given the importance of studying the spread within the home care sector putting in mind that there are a high proportion of adult users of home care services Creswell, JW. (2013). In A Modest Proposal, swift has portrayed the 18th century Ireland as plagued with the problem of overpopulation, unemployment, poverty and the exploitation of the labor class by the bourgeoisie(middle class). The same problem being addressed by Karl Marx in sociological labor theories. The course of actions suggested by Swift J is, however, adverse and sets forth an example of a satirical classic piece of literature viewed and analyzed by many people over the centuries. The theme of the essay is suppression and hence deterioration in the state of the Catholic subjects at the hands of their Protestant Landlords and similar conditions pertaining to 1729 in Ireland. These problems were partly due to the Irish Catholics supporting theâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Swift even goes far enough to determine the cost incurred by parents in bearing and rearing such children till one year of age and the profit they can make on the sale. Swift claims here that if the husband knows that kicking the wife would potentially harm the child that can be sold for money in the market he will treat his wife more affectionately as she is about to generate income for the family. The leering rhetorical challenge of this satirical essay is capturing the attention of an audience who has appeared indifferent and desensitized at many occasions, this shocking appeal immediately captures their attention. From the starting logos appeal the appeal later in the passage becomes more ethos based as it challenges the morality of the society. The writer appeals to the ethos of the audience by claiming himself as honest time and time again and stating overtly that he has no personal interest as he has no minor children. Swift gives the impression that all the passage comes straight from the heart due to compassion for the Irish population and the concern for their well-being. By doing this, Swift becomes practically successful in the eyes of the audience as it portrays him as the champion of the poor, destitute and oppressed and a hero of the Irish people. Essay On Slavery Vs Thomas Jefferson - 769 Words
People commonly believe that Thomas Jefferson is a hypocrite, due to one of his most famous quotes is ââ¬Å"all men are created equalâ⬠, he owned slaves and never released them. The topic over slavery and Thomas Jefferson is extremely controversial today in America. In each excerpt, each author clearly addressed the issue of presentism. In Wilsonââ¬â¢s excerpt he addressed the issue of presentism by, considering the time eras and the dilemmas that Jefferson had. He wrote that Jefferson knew that slavery was wrong, but freeing them when they had been slaves their whole life was not the correct answer. In Finkelmanââ¬â¢s excerpt he addressed the issue of presentism, because he said ââ¬Å"Jefferson fails the testââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢. There was not a literal test, but based onâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦I believe that Wilsonââ¬â¢s argument was supported by the primary source documents. In the 3rd and 4th primary documents it shows Jeffersonââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"understanding on why the slaves should be freedâ⬠, but it states why he believes it is better off the way it was at that point in time. I also believe that Finkelmanââ¬â¢s argument was supported by the second primary source. Finkelman just had a different approach to the Thomas Je fferson and slavery than Wilson. Finkelman took into consideration everything that Jefferson stated in the all of the primary sources and came to the conclusion that Jefferson was a hypocrite. Finkelman has no understanding of Jeffersonââ¬â¢s reasoning like Wilson did. I believe that each historians had such a different interpretation of the Thomas Jefferson and slavery issue, because of their political views. I believe that Wilson is almost certainly a republican, while Finkelman was more than likely a democrat. For a while now in America, Americanââ¬â¢s have had split views on a great deal of things in history. For example the confederate flag. Republicans believe it is a part of our history and should remain, while democrats believe that it is racist and a way for discrimination to still be in America. Based on the ethical standpoint that I chose, slavery is not tolerable or considered right in any given situation, I would interpret Jefferson as a coward when it came to slaves. This study is designed to focus on the effectiveness of school based sex education programs in order to prevent teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases (STDââ¬â¢s)/human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/ acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). School districts across the United States have been teaching sex education program, however each varies with the type of program that is taught. The number of adolescents who engage in sexual activities has declined in past years. Nonetheless, the United States being one of the most industrialized nations still has one of the highest rates of teen pregnancy. Risky sexual behaviors likewise attribute to the number of individuals who live with sexually STDââ¬â¢s/HIV/AIDS. Of high school studentsâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Because abstinence-only programs have been deemed ineffective, it is critical that school districts consider a more comprehensive approach. This has become debatable with the issue of timing due to fact that ma ny believe earlier sex education can be correlated to an earlier onset of sexual intercourse. While some adolescents begin to receive some degree of sex education as early as fourth and fifth grades, other during middle school, and some in high school, much critical information goes untouched (Kenny, 2014). According to Somers Eaves (2002), various studies have been done in an attempt to evaluate the effectiveness of sex education programs and their impact on adolescents. While some have produced positive results others have found little to no impact. The main purpose of this study was to examine if the timing of sex education had an influence on the first encounter of sexual intercourse. Past theory has shown that some adolescents are unable to deal with sexual relations at an early age, while past literature suggests that some adolescents become educated after the fact (Somers Eaves, 2002, p. 25). Taking this information into consideration, it is suggested that earlier sex education can be related to less sexual behavior, thus engaging in intercourse at a later age. This is quite critical for parents to understand when consent forms are sent home for permission of their adolescents to participate during sex education. The Great Depression Of Canada - 1265 Words
The Great Depression in Canada The Great Depression may very well have been one of the most significant eras in Canadian history. It has taught us many lessons about the present and predicting the future. The ââ¬Ëdirtyââ¬â¢ thirties, as it was referred to, was a time of hardship and poverty for most. One in five Canadians were dependent on government relief to sustain their lives. The Prairie Provinces in Canada were said to be the worst hit in the world. They were almost completely dependent on the
